Edition Records was formed in March 2008 by pianist / composer Dave Stapleton and photographer Tim Dickeson. Based in Cardiff, Edition Records has quickly become one of the leading jazz labels in UK and has been critically acclaimed for every album they have released from both the UK and international press.
Edition is an artist based label, and both Dave Stapleton and Tim Dickeson realised from the outset that if you give want the artist needs then it will attract the best music and musicians around and as an Edition artist himself, Dave Stapleton knew exactly how to achieve that.
Their first release in May 2008 was an album of short improvisations by pianists Matthew Bourne and Dave Stapleton and later in 2008 released albums by Bristol based saxophonist Kevin Figes, Welsh bassist Paula Gardiner and Leeds improvising trio Bourne Davis Kane to critical acclaim from the UK’s press. Despite massive artistic success in trhoughout the year Edition, in Dec 2008, suffered their first set back with their UK distribution running into volunatry administration and it looked like, with closure of some retailers and other distributors, it was not the right time to be forming a jazz record label. However, in Jan 2009 Edition bounced back and secured a distribution deal in the UK with Harmonia Mundi (ACT, ENJA) and whilst attending Midem, the worlds largest music conference in Cannes, France, Edition secured further distribution in 23 countries which radically increased sales and the profile of both the label and every artist.
In early 2009 Edition signed pianist Geoff Eales, Leeds bassist Dave Kane, Polar Bear saxophonist Mark Lockheart, London based trio Troyka and later pianist Ivo Neame to their roster and released their albums to huge acclaim from both the UK and international press. Sales of both physical CD’s and downloads completly over took sales from 2008 and prompted a surge or musicians to approach Edition to release their own albums.
Currently Editon Records are finalising deals with some of the most exciting musicians in the UK and Europe and over the coming months will announce their new signings, the 2010-11 release schedule as well as an exciting new catalogue called 'Limited Edition'.
